What to do Before a Botox Treatment:

There’s lots of information floating around about what to do to get ready for a Botox treatment. Whether it’s your first time or one hundredth time, here are some tips to prepare for your Botox appointment.

Do eat healthy and drink plenty of water the week before your treatment. This will help your skin be in tip-top shape for when the big day arrives and can reduce any swelling that may occur. Do tell me if you bruise easily. I can recommend products to take beforehand that will help.

Don’t take any anti-inflammatory or blood-thinning medications (Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Fish Oil, Vitamin E) 7 days before your treatment. These types of medications increase your chance of bruising and swelling at the injection site.

Schedule your appointment within 1 week of any big event. Since the treatment could cause bruising or swelling you want to give yourself ample time to heal and look picture-perfect.

Immediately after your treatment, you may be aware that ‘something’ has happened, although most people report feeling no different at all.

How Will You Look Immediately after Botox Injections?

Some people look a little patchy or bumpy for approximately 15 minutes, usually the patches or tiny bumps will subside by the time the appointment is finished. For a few it may last a bit longer but that will depend on your skin type and this will be discussed before you are treated.  Some people on lunchtime appointments just go straight back to work.

If you bruise, or happen to bruise easily, it tends to show pretty quickly, usually within the first 24hrs or quicker, if I bruise a client, I can tell immediately, and I might ice the area and recommend arnica cream.

Tip – If anyone guarantees that you won’t bruise, be wary. Unfortunately, as the procedure involves a needle, there’s always a chance of a bruise, this can happen to any practitioner no matter how experienced. However, a small bruise to smooth out your wrinkles is not the end of the world on the bigger scale.  If you are particularly prone to bruising tell me before and I can use ice prior to treatment, doesn’t always work but worth a try.  Most small bruises can be covered at a later point with concealer; however, I will always look for veins to try and avoid them in the first instance.

Obviously if you have this procedure with me, I’ll talk you through all the dos and don’ts’ post treatment before you leave. I will also send you away with a card which contain these instructions.  I am always a phone call away if I am needed.  However, touching on the most important points very briefly:

  • Don’t rub or put pressure on your face for 24 hours, don’t lie down for at least four hours,

  • don’t exercise for 24 hours following the treatment.,

  • try to avoid sleeping flat on your face for 3-4 days,

  • avoid intense heat or sun after treatment,

  • stay hydrated and drink lots of water.

  • I always advise not to have eyebrows threaded or waxed for 2 weeks

Very occasionally, people can experience mild headaches following a Botox procedure. I believe this is more to do with the process rather than the product and can be treated with paracetamol or ibuprofen if patient has no allergies to this medication. Patients mostly experience none of these symptoms, but It’s always good to be aware of side effects.

Then you just have to wait for the treatment to start, be patient. Remember, the Botox treatment doesn’t take effect immediately: It usually takes 4-5 days to start taking effect and will continue to work up until two weeks.  Some people can have earlier effects but in general 4-5 days is a good guide.  Please don’t worry if by day 10 you don’t see much difference, often day 12 and my Botox kicks in.  It’s an individual process and everyone will have a different rate of acceleration of treatment time.

Over the next 7 days, you might still be aware that something is happening and may feel a little heaviness on your forehead, although most people just get used to this new feeling and not everyone experiences this.  You’ll also start to see some of your lines smoothing away and will be overjoyed as you see your skin smooth in front of you.  The very beauty of this miracle working treatment.

Around two weeks after your procedure, I’ll invite you to come back for a review appointment which is all part of the same treatment and at no cost to you. It’s here that I may tweak an area with some more Botox if needed.

We can compare your before & after pictures at this appointment. It always amazes me how quickly people forget how they looked two weeks before and how quickly they adapt to their new smoother look.  I love a review appointment as I get to see the results first hand and see how my patients fully appreciate the results in comparison to 2 weeks before.  This appointment is not only used as an assessment to see how you’ve responded to the treatment but to give me those amazing after pictures for my files.

Typically, your Botox will last for 3-4 months, however this is a based guide and everyone will break their Botox down at different rates.

The longevity of the treatment can depend on things such as sun exposure, exercise and how often you’ve previously gotten Botox injections. If you’ve regularly been getting treated, your results may last longer than a first-timer.
